On behalf of the Education Bureau and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, we would like to welcome you all to the Biennial Gifted Education Conference 2014.

This is the fifth biennial gifted education conference jointly organised by the Education Bureau and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education. Similar to our usual practice, we would like to make use of this 2-day meeting as a platform for professional exchange among educators. On the first day of the Conference, we are honoured to have Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of the Education Commission, to deliver the keynote speech. Besides, school heads who have been dedicated to the promotion of school-based gifted education and some other stakeholders in the gifted education community are also invited to share their experience and expertise: students will share about how they are inspired by the school-based gifted education provision which facilitates their search for life-long goals; teachers of different KLAs will share their insights in and strategies for nurturing gifted students ; officers from the Education Bureau will share from the planning perspective the effective way of implementing school-based gifted education provision. We believe that the diverse and practical contents can meet the needs of all participants and allow you all to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the local gifted education.

The theme of the conference this year is: ‘Hong Kong Needs Talents; Talents Need us’. Gifted students are valuable assets of our society. Providing a favourable environment to allow these gifted students to shine and contribute to the well-being of our society is the ultimate goal of gifted education. Under the joint effort of the Education Bureau and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education throughout the past years, awareness and understanding of gifted education among the general public, especially the front line teachers in primary and secondary schools, have been greatly enhanced. Our next mission is to further enhance the provision of Gifted Education programmes in Hong Kong, complementing the curriculum offered at schools. This is to help schools further enhance the quality of their school-based gifted education provision so as to enrich the talent pool of Hong Kong through providing the gifted generation with more challenging and balanced learning opportunities.

We sincerely hope that all participants will gain some insights from this Conference and gather the necessary momentum to keep working together for the betterment of the gifted.
